High Holiday Food Drive 2016

The High Holiday Food Drive is the Mitzvah Food Project’s largest food drive of the year! We need your help collecting nutritious, non-perishable PROTEIN food items for those in our community who are in need.

WHERE: The food drive is held at your synagogue or community organization. Once your drive is over, you can deliver the donations to one of our pantry sites, the SHARE warehouse, or meet the SHARE truck at your scheduled pick up time (deadlines and details below). 

WHEN: You set the dates for your food drive, delivery or pick up. See links below or visit our FAQ’s for more information.

WHY: Your food donations support households in need of nutritious food for months at our five pantry sites! With your help last year, we collected over 33,000 lbs of food which supplemented our food orders for 4 months.

HOW:  Complete the required registration form and other forms online and do not miss the due dates below; once we have your registration form, we will e-mail you a personalized collection flyer to post and/or hand out.

This year we will be collecting ONLY CANNED PROTEIN ITEMS:

  • Canned Beans Kosher required; lower salt preferred (i.e. legumes, chickpeas etc.)
  • Nut Butters Kosher required; lower salt preferred (i.e. peanut butter, almond butter etc.)
  • Canned Fish Kosher required; (canned tuna, salmon, sardines, etc.)

All food collected must meet the following criteria:

  • Make sure all donations have a current date
  • Make sure all donations are properly sealed
  • NO Bulk sizes (large items cannot be packaged easily and are not appropriate for our senior recipients)
  • NO glass items

Collection Container Deliveries

Food Collection Containers:

  • are available to borrow from SHARE if you anticipate a medium to large collection this year<
  • are basic, undecorated collection containers that can be decorated by volunteers/children at your site
  • can be picked up at SHARE or delivered to you on a limited basis
  • cannot be exchanged if you are unhappy with the appearance or condition
    If containers are not in acceptable condition upon initial receipt, please decorate them or store them until your scheduled pick-up/return date. DO NOT throw them away! Sorry, no early pick-ups or exchanges are available.
  • must be returned in the same condition as when received or you will be billed by SHARE
  • When possible, we encourage synagogues/organizations to either make their own collection boxes or to pick-up their borrowed containers at SHARE.

Food Donation Pick-ups:

  • will be scheduled for the first 20 synagogues/organizations that complete the forms and anticipate a large collection - more than a trunk/car-load full
  • are made by SHARE, our primary partner for this food drive; SHARE has only one driver and one truck available for pick ups
  • cannot be re-scheduled once they are set
  • require that two volunteers assist in loading food donations into the truck on the day of the pick-up
  • must include the use of our Reporting Form to take an approximate inventory of your collection before delivery/pick-up!
  • When possible, we encourage synagogues/organizations to perform an extra mitzvah and deliver their collection to one of our pantry sites or the SHARE warehouse
