Camp Scholarships

Due to a malfunction with the Jewish Federation website, you may have attempted to apply for a camp scholarship and been unable to do so. Therefore, we are extending the deadline for overnight camp scholarships to Friday, March 3rd, 2017. The deadline for day camp scholarships remains March 31st, 2017.

Requirements and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1) Who is eligible?

Campers must be between the ages of 5 and 19 years old. Campers must live in one of Jewish Federation’s five counties: Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, or Philadelphia. Campers must identify as Jewish.

2) Do campers have to attend camp for a certain amount of time to be eligible?

Yes. Overnight campers need to attend for at least 19 consecutive days and day campers need to attend for at least 15 days (which may be nonconsecutive).

3) How do I get my funds?

Scholarship money is not sent to families. Rather it is remitted directly to the camps who apply the scholarship amount against the camper’s bill.

4) How much money can I receive?

Depending on the family’s need and the cost of camp, which we will verify with the camp directly, eligible campers can receive between 10 and 30% of the cost of camp.

5) Why do you need my financial information?

Given the limited amount of funds at Jewish Federation’s disposal, we use a family’s tax return to help us determine need. Families must submit either a 2015 or 2016 tax return, whichever is available.

6) Can I receive both need-based scholarship money and a One Happy Camper grant?

No, you can only apply for one or the other. If you are the parent of a first-time camper, please click here to go our One Happy Camper page to see if you are eligible for that funding first: https://www.jewishphilly.org/programs-services/jewish-camping/one-happy-camper

7) I have not yet registered for camp. Can I apply for a scholarship?

All applicants must be registered for camp by the application deadline. We cannot process the applicantion of any camper who has not registered for camp.

8) I have received a scholarship from you, but now my child's summer camp plans have changed and my child wants to attend another camp. Can I transfer the funds my child received to another camp?

While we cannot increase the size of the award, we will do our best to transfer awards. However, once awards are paid out to the camp, we cannot make any further changes. Furthermore, if the length of your camp stay decreases, we will adjust the size of your award accordingly to match the new cost of camp.

9) I missed the scholarship award deadline. What do I do?

Unfortunately, we cannot process late applications on a one-by-one basis, as our award calculations are contingent on the total number of applications that we receive by our deadline. Should more funds become available, we will create a waiting list and accept a second round of applications. Please note, though, that funds are extremely limited and those individuals who submit by the deadline get priority.

10) When will I hear if I have received a scholarship?

Scholarship forms will not be processed until our deadlines close (2/28/17 for overnight camp and 03/31/17 for day camp). At that point we will review all applications and we hope to notify parents and camps of our decisions by late March for overnight camp and April for day camp. Thank you for your patience. If you did not receive a confirmation e-mail after submitting your application, please contact Shannon Greenstein at 215-832-0530. Please do not forget to first check your SPAM folder.

11) My child is going to Israel with a camp program. Are they eligible for a camp scholarship?

Unfortunately, we only fund domestic camp programs from our list of approved camps. That said, your child may be eligible for one of the Jewish Federation's Israel grants, which you can apply to here.
