J-Serve 2008: Serve and Fight Hunger in Philly

Sunday, April 13 from 1:30-4:00pm

SHARE WAREHOUSE (2901 West Hunting Park Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19129)

J-Serve is made possible by a grant from PANIM, and is organized for the community by the Community Youth Initiative, the Service Learning and Leadership Institute of JCHS of Gratz College, and SHARE Food Program, Inc.

About SHARE Food Program

SHARE (Self-Help and Resource Exchange) is a program where people can purchase a package of food for $18 and 2 hours of community service with a retail value of about $35.  The food package contains meat, fresh fruits, vegetables, and staples.  SHARE buyers purchase the food from growers, brokers, and packaging plants.  The food is not donated, government surplus, or salvage.

SHARE IS UNIQUE:  SHARE is for everyone.  “If you eat, you qualify”.  Everyone in the community can participate.  Because it is for everyone, it can help break down barriers that divide people...barriers like race, religion, social and economic classes, gender, age, etc.  When we break down barriers, we can begin to see each other as real people, and begin to build community and neighborhoods.

What is J-Serve?

J-Serve is a single day on which Jewish teens across the country perform acts of community service in conjunction with Youth Service America's Global Youth Service Day.  The goal of J-Serve is to create an annual event around which the entire Jewish community can mobilize across denominational/movement lines.  In only its third year, J-Serve 2007 engaged over 7,000 teens in 62 projects across North America.  Learn more about J-Serve around the country at www.jserve.org.
